spill tab – Calvaire

Square

Something that I’ve always loved and respected about music is its ability to overcome the language barrier. You don’t need to understand the lyrics to really ‘feel’ or enjoy a song. Something that I love and respect, even more, is a musical artist who is able to write and perform in not one, but two languages and who still somehow kills it. spill tab is one such beautiful and rare a creature.

It is not every day you come across a talent like that of spill tab’s Claire Chicha. Based in Los Angeles, she has been on the indie-pop scene for a couple of years now and is starting to make a name for herself. spill tab is a bilingual artist with an angelic voice, undeniable star power, production, and song-writing abilities. She released her debut EP “Oatmilk” in December featuring four new tracks: Calvaire, Cotton Candy, Name, and Santé. All songs, incredibly good.

The song that caught my attention most was Calvaire. Calvaire gives way to dreamy and smooth vocals, masterfully layered textured sounds, and a banger of a beat. It’s catchy, it’s fun and very addictive to listen, and dance to. You don’t need to speak or understand French to appreciate this gem. But if we’re going to talk meaning, let’s look to what the artist has to say:

Calvaire represents shitty circumstances that can ruin life. Something overbearing, like searching for a pack of cigs but you’ve gotta hit a thousand spots ’cause every bodega is closed. Or realizing the infinite compromises you’ve made for the love of your life. It’s varied but ultimately funny. You recognize just how much you’ve put up with them, the love of your life, your Calvaire.”
