Vampire Weekend – Unbearably White

Square

Unbearably White is one of three double singles on Vampire Weekend‘s newest album Father of the Bride which was released in May of 2019.

The song brings you through the breakdown of a failing relationship. It symbolizes how cold, empty, blank, and bleak things can feel when they fall apart. The lyrics take us on a journey to tell a story of disappointment, heartbreak, suffocation, and failure. You feel it all too deep in the somber melody, jazzy-bass, & what sounds like a distant steam whistle shouting a warning as the music reaches a fever pitch.

The song ends with hazy pop vibes of repetitive emotionless lyrics, Call it a day, call it a night, calloused and cold and just unbearably white. It’s a little sad, a little heartbreaking but ultimately hauntingly beautiful.

Take a listen.
